US Potato Export Value +19%

US potato exports hit record highs
Amount during July 2022 – June 2023 period. Export value increased by 19% to €2 billion and export volume increased by 3.8% to 3.3 million tonnes (fresh weight equivalent).

Export value of U.S. potatoes increased by double-digit values ​​in all categories (frozen potato products, fresh, dried, seed potatoes and crisps) except for seed potatoes. There was an increase in exports of mashed potato flakes and crisps, which increased by 25.6% and 11.1% respectively. In total, about 20% of US potatoes are exported.

From July 2022 to June 2023, Mexico became the largest US potato export market for the first time, followed by Canada and Japan. In May 2022, the entire Mexican market was opened to US potato exports.

US exports of frozen potato products rose 20.4% in value to €1.2 billion, down 4.5% in volume from the previous 12 months. The major export markets for frozen potato products from the United States are Japan, Mexico, and South Korea. Export value of frozen potato products increased in all three countries, with a significant 25.9% increase in exports to Japan.

The value of exported mashed potato flakes increased by 24% to €237 million and the volume increased by 25.6% to 965,523 tonnes. The major destinations for US mashed potato flakes are Canada, Japan, and Mexico, and exports to each of these countries have increased in value and volume.

The value of potato sales rose 15.5% to 286.9 million euros over the previous 12 months, although the volume of US exports fell 3%. Canada, Mexico, and Japan were the main export markets for U.S. potatoes, with both value and volume increasing for Mexico.

Although they account for a small portion of US potato exports, potato chip exports increased by 11.34% in value and 11.1% in volume. Seed potato exports increased by 3.6% in value, but decreased by 5.8% in volume. The value of exports of chips and seed potatoes from the US was €202.4 million and €13.9 million respectively.
