The US Senate has approved a $ 40 billion military aid package in support of Ukraine in its war against Russia. The US House of Representatives has previously approved this.
The plan received strong support in the Senate. Passed by a margin of 86 votes to 11. All the votes against are Republicans. President Joe Biden must now sign the law.
$ 40 billion is more than 5 percent of the total U.S. defense budget of $ 782 billion.
The new package does not include the $ 4.5 billion US aid to Ukraine since the Biden administration took office. Of that, about $ 3.8 billion was disbursed after the February 24 Russian invasion.
Currently, $ 11 billion worth of weapons and equipment are being transferred directly from US military reserves to Ukraine. The package includes nearly $ 20 billion for the defense sector. The Pentagon uses most of that money to supply weapons to the Ukrainian military. A further $ 3.9 billion will be available for troop augmentation and other military operations in Europe to strengthen NATO.
