Verstappen backs Perez: ‘He’s not the problem’

Sergio Perez is currently under a lot of pressure at Red Bull Racing. His results are disappointing and there is a chance he could lose his seat. Max Verstappen sympathizes with his teammate, and says that the current problems are not caused by Perez.

Perez extended his contract with Red Bull earlier this year. However, this new deal does not provide any guarantees for the future, as his performances have been disappointing. He is much slower than Verstappen and makes too many mistakes. In Belgium, Perez qualified well and started the race in second place. He quickly dropped back and was classified seventh. Christian Horner and Helmut Marko were decisive after that.

Perez

Verstappen seems to have a different opinion. The world championship leader is behind Perez, pointing to completely different problems at Red Bull. The Dutchman is apparently in discussions with Sky Sports Germany about this: “I don’t think Checo is the problem at the moment. Our problem is that we have to find more lap time. We know that and we will analyse everything we have done so far.”

Verstappen also saw a bright spot, as he was quite satisfied with his race in Belgium. The Dutchman shared his opinion: “We drove a bit at the same pace throughout the race. In the first stint and at the start of the second stint I had a lot of traffic, which increased the wear on the tyres. On top of that, we only had one hard tyre, which made the last stint very difficult, and the rest were fast and could have pushed more, while for us it was about damage control, and I think that place is also good, as I finished the race ahead of Lando Norris.
