An elephant in a wildlife park in Kenya has given birth to twins. This is extremely rare. If this happens, one of the two young ones usually dies. But fortunately, the chances of survival for these healthy twins are favourable.
look. Beautiful pictures! Mother elephant with her two young ones:
Mother Alto gave birth to twins in Samburu National Reserve, a famous national park in Kenya. The nature conservation organization Save the Elephants announced the news via Instagram. “The two beautiful calves are estimated to be just a few days old and were spotted for the first time this week by researchers at the national park,” Save the Elephants wrote.
Lots of rain and lots of support
Two years ago, twins were also born in the park, then a male and a female. Unfortunately, the female calf was unable to survive due to the drought. Elephant Rescue is optimistic about the chances of the new twins’ survival, because it has rained a lot recently and the mother is receiving a lot of support from the rest of the herd.
There are currently an estimated 36,000 elephants living in Kenya. The elephant is on the endangered list, but its numbers are increasing again. In the early 1980s, there were still 170,000 in Kenya. Twins are rare in elephant groups. They make up just 1% of births, according to Save the Elephants.
