[VIDEO] Mercierplein Suites All Ready – Radio Reflex

The pavilions in Mercierplein have been built for a while, but it took some time for the finishing to complete. Since today you can see the end result: one wing that depicts an old clerk’s house, and the other that makes you dream of Nieuwe Vesten with pictures of the future. Inside, information panels explain the history of the city walls.

Pending the final renovation of the walls, the City of Mechelen and the Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) are already redesigning the space that is available today. For example, there was already more greenery throughout the clothing, a pétanque court and game items at Olivetenvest and a striking new piece of furniture at Brusselpoort that could serve as both a seating item and a meeting place. Starting this Friday, Zinzi Moons is going to color the place even further with her illustrations. As of today, the temporary stands at Kardinaal Mercierplein are also fully ready. Soon Coffice will be running the takeaway in one of the stands.

Until 1961 you could find clerks’ houses on the Kardinaal Mercierplein. This is where the gate money was collected. This gate fee was only abolished around 1860. After this most of the clerks’ houses were demolished. The ones on Kardinaal Mercierplein remained standing until 1961 when they had to disappear due to the widening of the ring road. The pavilions that exist today are equally large and are in the exact locations where the scribes’ homes used to be.

Mayor Alexander Vandersmessen: “With the temporary renovation of the Strat, we want to make the people of Mechelen dream. The contemporary evocation of the clerks’ houses shows where the bar must be set for the final renovation of the Strat. It shows the level of ambition of the project in terms of picture quality, but also the new forms of urban experience. Yet All in all, the space freed up on the jackets by introducing one-way offers huge opportunities. This project is an invitation to the people of Mechelen to think about this with an open mind.”

Member of Parliament from Public Works Patrick Prinsen: “The two wings depict the past and future of this place and the ramparts, but you can also step past and beyond. From the platform at the ‘Old Writer’s House,’ you can walk almost to the treetops. We let the Malinois fully enjoy the greenery.” After all, Nieuwe Vesten has become much greener and more biodiverse. In the other stand you can find more information about the rich history of vests and coffee ready-made.The Mechelen De Bemanning agency took great care of the graphic design. The decoration was done very consciously with reusable materials. The pavilions will remain there Until September.”

Participation Board Member Rina Rabo Nkandu: “The design of the two pavilions also provides us with an opportunity to engage in a very visual dialogue with the people of Malinoi. Also in the final design there is room in those locations to organize the public realm differently. Would we like the old commune houses there again to remind us of our history Rich? Or do we want modern pavilions there where you can eat, drink or buy a newspaper? Or do we choose green or water? Everyone can submit their ideas via information boards in the pavilion next to Parking Bruul or via www.denieuwevesten.be/paviljoenen-toekomst”.

Towards a complete renewal of jackets

Starting in the fall of 2025, we will be revamping jackets from front to back. We are dividing the road, installing a new separate sewage system, and making sure that a heat network can be installed. We will then rebuild the castles with new bike paths, footpaths, toll roads, more green spaces, gardens and full squares. We aim for a pioneering end result with room for all road users. With places to walk, exercise, play and enjoy the green spaces. Nieuwe Vesten is a completely new part of town where biodiversity can thrive and is climate resilient with more space for greenery and water. The design team is working hard on the designs of this innovation. on denieuwevesten.be Can you see the preview.
