Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told a conference of American conservatives in Dallas that European and American conservatives must unite to take back “power” in Washington and Brussels.
Viktor Orbán, speaking to a gathering of American conservatives, called for a joining of forces. According to Hungarian Prime Minister, ‘liberals’ threaten Western civilization. Orban pointed out that US elections will be held in 2024 and Europe will elect a new parliament.
Orban, who was re-elected for a fourth term in April, made other notable statements. Among other things, he said the United States needed a strong leader to negotiate a peace deal with Russia over Hungary’s conflict with neighboring Ukraine. “Only a strong leader can negotiate peace,” Orban said. “We need a strong America with a strong leader.”
The statements came at a meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), America’s leading political organization. Orban called himself a “freedom fighter”. “Anyone who accuses me or my government of racism is a fool,” he said. “We have zero tolerance for racism and anti-Semitism. Blaming us is “fake news”.’
Orphan didn’t make a direct connection to Donald Trump, but it was clear to many viewers that he was pointing at Trump and mocking Joe Biden in the same move.
Trump and Orbán have a good relationship, and Trump has already indicated that he wants to run for president again in 2024.
Like Trump in the US, Orbán’s Hungarian policy has drawn heavy criticism. Europe accuses Orbán of undermining democracy with immigration controls and of wanting to control the media and NGOs with his government.
