VT1 Canada result: Camera failure ends practice early

The first free practice session at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal has already ended. On the Canadian runway, the fastest time was set by Valtteri Bottas. Behind him, the second fastest time was set by Lance Stroll. Fernando Alonso completed the top three.

The first free practice on Canadian asphalt was started by the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. Verstappen was the first on the track and almost all the drivers soon joined him. With rain expected for the rest of practice, track time on a dry track was very important to the drivers.

But soon everyone was able to return to the hole. Pierre Gasly’s Alpine bogged down with driveshaft problems. Alpine asked him to restart the car, but he was unsuccessful. The red flag was waved and the marshals quickly pushed the car behind the guardrail. The Mercedes was already waiting in the pit lane for the session to resume, but the mechanics pushed it into the pit box. There were problems with the camera systems around the track, which meant that the session could not be restarted for safety reasons.

It was a huge disappointment for the drivers as it looked like this would be the only practice where they could run in dry conditions. The hosts decided to extend the second free practice session by half an hour. This gives drivers more time to familiarize themselves with the track. However, it remains to be seen how much this will help, as heavy rains can cause other problems.
