The VVD in Coevorden is committed to establishing a School of Music at Coevorden Town Hall. And no proposal to that effect was made on Tuesday evening: no other party supported the plan.
VVD council member Lucie Ter Waarbeek called the lack of a central place for music education a “great loss”. It would be a great pity if the children from Coevorden were not given the opportunity to develop musically, while elsewhere that might be possible. We envy our children in Coyforden certain opportunities.”
When the new Hof van Coevorden City Hall was completed in 2011, Coevorden reserved much of the space for the CQ Arts Centre. In addition, the functions of the municipal counter are located in the complex located in the market. The council hall is also suitable for a theatre.
CC is bankrupt
But CQ went bankrupt in 2014. De Nieuwe Veste used the vacant space for years, just like other parties as a dance school. But they all disappeared, so a new explanation for the so-called Cultuurhuis must be found.
Coevorden’s recently opened School of Music is divided among several school buildings. The VVD sees culture as a nice central place for music education, which can also “give a boost to the cultural sector downtown”. VVD wants Coevorden to lease the space under attractive conditions. “It is profitable for institutions to give lessons,” explained Ter Warbeck.
friendly
Fractions described the proposal with sympathy, but also experienced obstacles at the same time. The PAC feared that Coevorden would become a carte blanche If there are no clear financial terms. CDA and BBC2014 referred to music lessons in different schools. These happen right after school, and are convenient for parents. The VVD acknowledged this, but at the same time pointed out practical problems. Music teachers can be deployed more efficiently in a central location. The director of the music school also wanted to start working at colleges last year, said Ter Warbeck, but was told “no”.
Alderman Stephen Stegen (BBC2014) also described the plan sympathetically, but advised the board to wait for the Culture Memorandum. It should be ready by summer. He wants to consider temporary rent.
too much
De Nieuwe Veste recently made a call to add 500 square meters to the new building near the train station, for cultural lessons. The mayor and aldermen agree and submit the proposal. This was too much for the majority in the council: an additional €1.7 million had to be added to the already large construction sum of €36 million.
The school will be allowed to use the faculties again from 2026, Stegen said. So the municipality cannot simply dispose of the space.
