Lily Yohannes has been selected for the US National Team. Ajax's top talent is on the roster for the Shebelieves Cup, a friendly competition. The United States is thus increasing the pressure: the Netherlands hope that Johannes will choose a career with the Dutch team.
The sixteen-year-old midfielder was born in the United States and played in Team USA's under-15 and under-16 training camps. She has lived in the Netherlands since she was ten, but still does not have a Dutch passport. The KNVB recently approached her to train with Dutch under-19 players. Johannes responded and went to a training camp in December.

If Yohannes plays for the United States, that choice doesn't have to be final. Footballers up to the age of 21 can change their football nationality if they have not played more than three matches for one country. However, this rule does not apply to players who have played minutes in an (inter)continental final.
Former international Leon Stendler answered Johannes' call. “The US is increasing the pressure”, she writes in X. “VFor context: Johannes doesn't have a Dutch passport, so you can't call him like in the US. In addition, it is a friendly match, while the Netherlands are fully focused on European Championship qualification.”
