A white Kansas City man has been charged with fatally shooting a black teenager outside his front door. According to the prosecutor, there is a “racial element” in the case.
The boy, Ralph Yarl, had rung the doorbell, but was at the wrong address. He was supposed to pick up his younger twin brothers, but the street names were misunderstood. When 84-year-old Andrew Lester opened the door, he shot Earl in the head. He shot 16-year-old Yarl in the arm while the boy was already on the ground.
According to the prosecutor, there was no conversation before the shooting. The boy was not in the person’s house either.
After the shooting, Yarl called for help at a nearby residence. He was eventually hospitalized in critical condition.
Police arrested Lester, but released him 24 hours later. Because the case may be about race, Americans reacted with fury to the incident, he writes The New York Times. For example, there was a demonstration at Lester’s house.
The suspect could be sentenced to life in prison
After mounting criticism, police announced Monday that the U.S. justice system will investigate the shooting. Shortly thereafter, he made two accusations against Lester. If convicted, the person faces life imprisonment.
According to prosecutors, it is unclear where Lester is now. Authorities have issued an arrest warrant. The attorney declined to comment on the “racial component.”
According to CNN US President Joe Biden has been in touch with Yaral’s family. Let the boy go home. Despite the gunshot wound to his head, his family is hopeful he will make a full recovery, a family lawyer says.
