Arnhem – Tejmen Berens of Arnhem with his entry Human and animal collision Overall Winner of National Geographic Photo Competition 2022. About Beren’s photograph of a baby crow in an animal shelter, the Professional Jury agreed: “This photograph tells a larger story in a subtle way.”
At the Avolare Wildlife Sanctuary in Doorweth, infected wild animals are treated and then released as quickly as possible. In the photo, the wings of a crow are checked for fractures. “Many wild animals in the Netherlands are infected by human actions, often out of ignorance,” says Behrens. “A bird falls out of the nest by trimming a fence, a hedgehog loses a leg due to a robotic lawn mower. With this photo and other series, I want to educate and inform people,” says Berens.
“While someone obviously wants to save the animal, the crow’s gaze is skeptical. That makes the picture exciting, according to the jury. It subtly tells a larger story: the story of the vulnerability of birds and our relationship with nature.”
Jury member and “award winning photographer” Jan Dirk van der Burg came out to surprise the winner of a photography competition in his hometown of Arnhem. “As a photographer, you want to take a photo that you are particularly proud of and happy with. The photo becomes a good addition to the story you want to tell. Very proud and happy Tejman Berens said when asked if he knew right away if this was a good photo.
The winning professional jury photos will be published in National Geographic Magazine, and the overall winner Tijmen Berens photo will be published as a Hallmark card.
