Caitlin Jensen, 28, visited a popularly conscious chiropractor in Savannah in June because she was experiencing neck pain. After a chiropractor broke her neck, the woman was taken to the hospital, where tests showed that four arteries in the woman’s neck had ruptured.
“The damage led to cardiac arrest and stroke,” the woman’s family wrote on the website. GoFundMe-page Request donations to pay for medical expenses. “She hasn’t had a heartbeat for ten minutes.”
Jensen was resuscitated, and during the operation, the doctors were able to partially repair the damage and place a stent. But the woman is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit a month after the facts. The woman regained consciousness but is largely paralyzed. For now, all she could do was close her eyes, hold her hand, or move her toes.
“Accidents like this are rare, but people should be aware of the risks,” said Molly McDermott, MD, a neurologist at Michigan Medicine. “Quick manipulation of the neck, which chiropractors use to increase joint range, can lead to dissection of the vertebral artery, which in turn can lead to stroke.”
