The mixed relay went more than well for the orange delegation, even perfectly. Starting runner Liemarvin Bonevacia ran straight to the front of the race, Lieke Klaver kept Holland up front, and Isaya Klein Ikkink ran better than expected.
He handed the baton in a leadership position to Paul and then nothing seemed to be going right, but it was too early. The Netherlands never won gold, nor did the Netherlands become world champions. No, Holland again ended up empty-handed in dramatic fashion.
Paul vs. Holmes
Although Bol vs Alexis Holmes is seen as an unequal battle and Bol runs out a bit at the start, the American was still on the heels of the Dutch trump. Paul couldn’t run her own race, so she had to fight her way to grab the gold.
Unfortunately, Paul pushed so much that she pushed the limits of her body and fell, making for a dramatic evening for Dutch athletics. First Hassan fell, then Paul fell to the ground. Road world title, road gold medal, road world record.
What Holland dropped, Team USA picked up. In keeping with tradition, the quartet is placed on the scoreboard to celebrate setting a new world record and the gold medal will soon be collected.
