World Cup 2022: USA qualifies for mixed relay team time trial

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 4:07 pm

The World Cycling Championships in Wollongong continue on Wednesday with the mixed relay. However, the US team must qualify for this event. The U.S. Cycling Federation was unable to put together a representative selection after Magnus Sheffield’s crash in the individual time trial.

Sheffield is a vital soldier on the US medley relay team, but a crash at last Sunday’s world time trial world championships throws a spanner in the works. The 20-year-old speedster did not sustain any serious injuries in his accident but is now fully focused on next Sunday’s road race.

“Team USA was excited to compete in the medley relay, but Magnus’ accident forced us to make the difficult decision to withdraw from the race. Our focus is now on supporting Magnus to start Sunday’s road race in top shape.”

Six men from Tahiti have the honor of opening the mixed relay at 06:23. At 7.45 am Belgium starts the mixed race. The Netherlands, one of the favorites for gold, will start at 08:22 as the final in the 28.8 kilometer team time trial. The last team to play at 8.26 am is defending champions Germany.
