Tibo Vyvey and Niels Van Zandweghe failed to qualify for the A final in the lightweight double sculls at the World Rowing Championships. In Serbia, the duo finished fifth in the semi-final, to qualify for the final battle, the Belgians had to finish in the top three. Tim Bryce got his revenge in the “consolation” semifinals.
Only Thibaut Fifi and Niels van Zandweghe are bettered by a Polish pair in the 2000 metres. They finished in 6’55’95, more than fourteen seconds behind Irish winners and Tokyo Olympic champions McCarthy O’Donovan.
The Belgian duo recorded the tenth fastest time in the semi-finals. In the B final for places 7 to 12, they will compete against duos from Mexico and Poland, China, New Zealand and Germany.
The Belgians will start the final on Saturday. If they win and finish seventh, they will still get a ticket to the Olympics.
Tim Bryce straightens his back
Tim Bryce convincingly won the semi-final in the C / D final. Our compatriot crossed the finish line with a significant margin over the competitor.
Price was unable to qualify for the A/B circuit for the quarter-finals yesterday after finishing fourth in a very tough series. He would have qualified for any other quarter-final.
Fortunately for Brees, there are still two Olympic qualifying matches on the program. In the past, Tim Maines and Hans Obreno have also positioned themselves this way. They both rowed in the Olympic finals.
