Wout van Aert's (29-year-old) spring was over before the week of truth arrived. He broke his collarbone and “some ribs” after falling in Dwars Door Vlaanderen. This is confirmed by the Visma-Lease a Bike team.
In one second, the work of the past months is shattered and the entire spring falls into the water: Wout van Aert has broken his collarbone and “some ribs” in Dwars Door Vlaanderen.
“It is not clear how long his recovery will take,” reports Visma-Lease a Bike. “He will definitely miss Ronde, Roubaix and Amstel.”
Van Aart had returned from a high-altitude training camp in Tenerife a week earlier. He has, among other things, canceled Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo to give everything he has to the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.
And on Friday, he took the string at the E3 Saxo Classic, where he finished third. He did not participate in Gent-Wevelgem on Sunday, today Dwars Door Vlaanderen had to give him a final push towards the monuments for the following two Sundays.
But 65 kilometers from the finish, Van Aert crashed on the descent towards Canariberg. Van Aart cried tears, groaned in pain and was taken to the hospital.
A broken collarbone was diagnosed there, which immediately put an end to the spring semester and all his plans.
