Three weeks after his horrific accident at Dwars Door Vlaanderen, in which he suffered multiple fractures, Wout van Aert rode a bike abroad for the first time. He proudly and happily shows off his new bike, but apologizes for the “spacers” on his handlebars.
On March 27, Wout van Aert broke his collarbone, sternum and several ribs. A week later he went for a walk outside for the first time, and today he went out into the world on a bicycle for the first time.
The unfortunate Visma-Lease a Bike leader took part on Strava on a 30km ride in just over an hour in the area around his hometown.
He showed off his new bike: a “full suspension” mountain bike with springs under the front fork and under the saddle, the new standard in mountain biking.
For added comfort, there were “spacers” under his leg, which were circular charms that made it possible to raise the handlebars.
Which immediately forced him to apologize. Van Aert apologized to all his teammates “whom he ever attacked because they had breaks under their shins.”
There is no further information about the timing of his rehabilitation. Van Aert announced last week that he would not ride the Giro. Starting on May 4, just like the Tour and Roubaix, the Tour of Italy was the main goal that went wrong.
