Since he already has to spend a lot of money, we set our budget at 8 lakh. We won’t skip Part D either, because our country has enough narrow streets that it’s difficult to turn a battleship. What might be useful for Santa Claus: a spacious, comfortable or fast carriage? Three pictures for different occasions.
Skoda Superb Combi 1.4TSI Greentech Ambition Businessline – 2013 – 227,122 km – 7,749 euros
The Skoda Superb Combi is so large that it can easily be classified in the budget e-segment. With the 603 as standard and thanks to a folding rear seat, and no less than 1,835 litres of boot space, it offers the same load volume as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class: enough to keep several children happy at once.
With $8k in your pocket, the flow is poor. In our used car collection we come across only two examples: one with a sensitive 160 hp 1.8 TSI engine with almost three tons on the clock, and a Skoda Superb with a more modest engine and also high mileage. Equipped with a tow bar (to carry another 1,400kg of parked gifts) and a navigation system, because the elderly bishop has to visit a lot of addresses in a short time – so driving in the wrong direction results in children waiting in a panic, so that’s a plus. Saint will have to shift gears himself, but who knows, maybe he has taken driving lessons in a Pegaso and is used to it. Such an unassuming Czech will cause few problems: driving behavior is stable and largely neutral, with the emphasis on comfort rather than sportiness. As a result, you’ll notice that you’re driving a heavy car through corners (a tendency to understeer), but when it comes to agility, of course no car comes close to Ozusnel!
The interior of this black 45-ZTX-4 (two previous owners) is efficient and practical, with the materials used showing that the Skoda (with seat) is at the bottom of the Volkswagen Group pecking order. As an Ambition Business Line, this used car is beautiful, complete and well-suited for those harsh, dark winter evenings: traction control, limited-slip differential, heated windshield washers, and xenon lighting are present, for example. If things go wrong, Saint’s fragile knees are protected by a knee airbag. If he wanted to take the Superb back to Spain (lots of room on a steamship!), the rear window provided a sunshade.

Citroën C5 Tourer 3.0-V6 Exclusive – 2009 – 259,772 km – € 7,950
Well, with the Superb Combi, space is key – for shopaholics like Sinterklaas, of course, this is very important – but for someone who is old and stiff in body and limbs, a big part of comfort should not be missed. And what occasion offers that more than a Citroën water car? Our second candidate: a Citroën C5 owned by a specialist brand in Vlissingen. Four years older than the Czech and a little more experienced, but then you have something: six cylinders, automatic transmission, semi-leather upholstery, electrically adjustable front seats including memory system (handy when Hovdbit takes the wheel)… plus Also here is the navigation and drag strip. The latter is nice, because the luggage space is much less generous than the Skoda’s ballroom (505 to 1,462 litres).
The hook can hold 1600 kilos of toys, so that makes up for it a bit. In a month, the Frenchman will be a young man, but that won’t make much difference to Santa, and neither will it when average consumption falls below 1 in 10 – then everyone will have less sweets. The biggest surprise is of course the active hydraulic suspension. It is no longer as floating as before, but it still smoothes out the largest wrinkles and you do not have to slow down at any threshold. There’s also a Sport mode to make the suspension firmer and the steering more direct, but we don’t see this station wagon making colorful laps like the Xantia Activa was capable of doing at the time, especially not with Sint behind the wheel. Behind that ring, Saint sees a dashboard made of beautiful materials with trivial features here and there. Comfort is great, of course: excellent large seats (although there is very little lateral support for narrower passengers), good sound insulation, lots of luxury (including smaller things like curtains in the rear doors) and of course the suspension. We would not be surprised if the good saint chose this means of transportation for his return to Spain instead of a steamer.

Audi S4 Avant 4.2 quattro Pro Line – 2003 – 245,398 km – 7,900 euros
We have a Superb Combi for all the packages, and a C5 Tourer for the luxury of Saint Nicholas himself. This leaves one aspect: to be able to serve the entire country smoothly on December 5th, a fast station wagon is necessary. Ozosnell may have been given that name, but the faithful gray horse can’t compete with the 344 peers living in this Audi S4. Just think: in less than 6 seconds it reaches 100 km/h and stops accelerating at only 250 km/h. All-wheel drive ensures safe handling in winter conditions. And there’s more: how about heated seats (good for the good saint’s cold buttocks) and a sliding/tilting glass roof – perfect for transporting employees upright.
The used car on offer is 20 years old, but has modest mileage for that age. On the other hand: It was registered with a Dutch license plate five years ago, and has gone through four owners since then. Will Santa be the fifth? Then it faces the smallest luggage space (from 442 to 1184 litres), while the tow bar is not possible. Well, that’s what you get with this lifestyle blend. Although Sinterklaas hated the lifestyle, he wore his class almost forever. But maybe you don’t need that much space: average fuel consumption of 1 in 7.5 (in built-up areas up to 1 in 5) takes up a significant portion of the household budget. And what about insurance? This makes it difficult to choose, because the S4’s lightweight interior is very attractive in terms of build quality and luxury, while the current Bose system transmits all the nursery rhymes quite clearly. If the S4 goes home, the average Spaniard probably won’t see the difference between that quick order and the first available Exeo ST seat, so the Sint doesn’t have to fear theft. In addition, there is an alarm system.

Which of these station wagons will Sinterklaas visit homes on December 5?
A tough choice: Sinterklaas buys a Skoda Superb Combi for the space, a Citroën C5 Tourer for his luxury, and an Audi S4 Avant so he can quickly deliver everything and then speed off to Spain. But what used car does he take with him? Or: Which of these three occasions would you like to treat yourself to on December 5? After all, Santa only does his best at the end of November/beginning of December, while you, as a good family man, struggle all year long! We’d love to hear it!
