I think so
The Saab brand went bankrupt more than a dozen years ago, and yet, in 2023, everything about the Swedish car manufacturer is still going strong. AutoWeek also loves the opportunity to drive a classic Saab, for example with a 900 GL from 1983.
It seems that the time when you could pick up a 900 Classic from the dealer for 500 euros is over forever. A good thing gets more expensive every year, especially if it’s a turbo. This is not the Saab we drive, on the contrary, it is the basic version. However, it says GL on the tailgate and it has to be said: it doesn’t look like a simple entry-level version, with some chrome here and there, tinted windows and a nice interior. The color combination is not boring. This 900 was delivered new to its first Dutch owner just over 37 years ago by dealer Lenderink (Enschede and Hengelo) and therefore still retains its original license plate. The dashboard was fitted with an updated tachometer, a popular accessory at the time. We are most impressed by the large, very clear VDO clocks with their bright orange hands: clock, speedometer and combined instrument for fuel supply and coolant temperature. This copy has 194,000 kilometers on it and has long found a new owner.
The three knobs for the interior climate are at approximately eye level and the radio operator is slightly above them. This has been really thought out. Then that panoramic windshield. What a view! Have you ever taken a close look at the open door in a Saab? There is a large gap in the sill where the bottom of the door is located. This way, your clothes, clothes or long coat will stay nice and clean when you walk in. The seat is comfortable and the seating position contributes to a safe driving style. Between the front seats we find the ignition switch (so that your knee does not get into the switch in the event of an accident) and the throttle lever. It’s a fun and comfortable car to drive, and feels safe even in today’s traffic. There is no fifth gear, but the noise level remains within limits even at 120 km/h. This 900 was built from 1978 to 1994, and until 1984 next to the 99. There are subsequent 900s of this generation for sale, but the price is fast approaching €10,000. This 1983 copy was on sale in 2021 for €4,950.
