Have you long dreamed of following in the footsteps of Anna Wintour (73)? This can be (almost) in a literal or figurative sense. The fashion bible editor-in-chief of Vogue is looking for a new assistant. Although you must meet strict requirements to hold this position.
Have you always dreamed of working for Vogue just like Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway) in the hit fashion movie The Devil Wears Prada? Then that can become a reality. The real-life editor of the legendary fashion magazine since 1988, Anna Wintour, is looking for a new right hand.
You pretty much run Anna’s entire agenda
Function? He has a lot of feet in the ground. You help the fashion icon and Head of Vogue, among other things, coordinate meetings, you’re responsible for general communications and the flow of information to and from the Wintour office, but you also manage their events and appointments.
According to Wintour, the ideal candidate is also very organized, respects deadlines, and can multi-task well. But you also have to be “confident, enthusiastic, emotionally intelligent, solution-oriented, down-to-earth, and eager to learn.”
Your level of education also plays a role. You must have a university degree and 1-2 years of work experience in a managerial position in a similar company. Good writing skills, ambition and passion for fashion and culture also seem to be a plus. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the plane ticket. Because in order to be able to fill the position, you must be present full time in the main office in New York.
Hard work for hungry wages
Don’t expect to meet Anna during your first introductory meeting. You have to wait about five application rounds for that. Only at six, you get just “two minutes” to chat with Anna.
Those who ultimately succeed can expect a wage of between $60,000 and $80,000 (about €55,000 to €74,000) per year. Judging by the number of reactions on social media, survival is very poor in a city like New York.
The job will also look a lot more glamorous than you think. Anyone who still remembers the beloved movie The Devil Wears Prada from 2006 knows it. Meryl Streep stars as Miranda Priestly, a terrifying magazine editor whose role is largely inspired by Anna Wintour. Her work experience will be similar to that of Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) in the movie.
For example, you’re overwhelmed with emails and coffee orders, some former assistants to a Vogue editor say. So be careful. Although former assistant Ray Vakili had nothing but praise for her time at Vogue. “The cool thing about this feature is that you could see every aspect of the magazine, as well as the making of the costumes and the scenery,” she told The Grace Tales.
And my agent was also very positive about Wintour himself. “Anna is an amazing woman. I think a lot of people don’t realize how involved she is in every aspect of the magazine. She knows almost everything.”
