Zelensky calls for stronger air defenses and sanctions after deadly missile attack on his hometown | Ukraine and Russia war

to updateUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses and imposing tougher sanctions on Russia after the deadly missile attack on his hometown of Kryvyi Rih. “Together with our partners, we must create conditions so that Russian terrorism becomes impossible,” he said in his daily video address on Tuesday night.

“If we take, for example, one of the missiles that hit Kryvyi Rih today, then there are about 50 parts of it that were made in other countries,” Zelensky said. Some of the parts were produced in Ukraine’s partner countries yet Russia managed to get the parts, it seems.

The Ukrainian president added that the companies working with Moscow are known. “If someone acts as a mediator or cooperates with Russia so that terrorists can continue to blow up homes and kill people, then these actors deserve an appropriate response from the world,” she said.

Zelensky also recalled his meeting with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, in Kiev. He expressed gratitude for the monitoring mission at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, but reiterated his call for it to be handed over to Ukraine to ensure safety.

The president was briefed on the war situation on Tuesday but spoke of “progress in different directions”. In recent days, Ukraine has already reported the liberation of several villages.

At least 10 dead and 30 wounded

At least 10 people have been killed in an attack on Kryvyi Rih in southeastern Ukraine after a Russian missile hit an apartment building. Nearly 30 people were also injured.

Zelensky sent his condolences to the bereaved family in a message on social media. The president also said that “Russian murderers continue their war against ordinary homes, cities and people.” “We will not forgive the terrorists and they will take responsibility for every missile they fire.”

According to Governor Serhi Lysak, the city was rocked by “an intense missile attack”. He said anti-aircraft defenses were able to repel three cruise missiles, but other missiles hit civilian targets, including a five-story apartment building. Pictures from Ukrainian media show that part of the apartment complex has been burned down.

The Russians also carried out air strikes elsewhere in Ukraine last night. In Kharkiv, near the Russian border, a government building and warehouse were hit by cruise missiles. There have been no reports of casualties from this town so far.

The capital, Kiev, was once again attacked by cruise missiles. The air defense managed to shoot them all down from the sky. “At the moment, we have not received any information about human or material losses,” said Sergei Popko, head of the military department in Kiev. Russian attacks regularly target both the capital and Kryvyi Rih.
