On Zonneberg, a former waste mountain with phosphorus gypsum from Kühlmann, where 55,000 solar panels were installed ten years ago, Terranova Hydrogen nv will build a hydrogen production facility. The project has obtained all permits and has also received €4.33 million in Flemish support.
Three companies, Terranova, Luminus and Nippon Gases Belgium, will collaborate in Zonneberg to produce this green hydrogen, including storage capacity, compression station and filling. In addition, there is the possibility of expanding the installation later. Now the entire facility will be located on approximately one hectare.
There is no CO2
Green electricity generated by solar panels continues to be produced during peak periods and possibly later as well with a few additional wind turbines. Hydrogen is a very clean energy source that can be used as a sustainable fuel for vehicles and industrial processes.
To make green hydrogen, with no carbon dioxide emissions, only water and green electricity are needed. Hydrogen is now mostly still ashen, extracted from natural gas and carbon dioxide emissions.
As part of the launch of the Flemish Hydrogen Vision, the Flemish government has granted strategic support of €4.33 million to Terranova Hydrogen nv at the end of 2022. In the meantime, the permit has also been granted and Terranova nv has started preparatory work on the site itself. The first hydrogen molecule is scheduled to be produced in early 2025.
strategy
A year ago, the port of Northsea, the merger of the ports of Ghent, Terneuzen and Vlissingen, announced its intention to develop into a hydrogen center on a European scale. The hydrogen strategy was developed with the aim of building several green hydrogen production plants by 2025.
